Everything you need to know about Materialists: Glitz, Glam, and Guys

Get ready to swipe right on the summer’s most anticipated romantic comedy of the summer, Materialists. This dazzling A24 film trades soul-staring intensity for Upper East Side sparkle — but don't be fooled by the glam. Beneath its high-gloss finish lies a sharp look at what happens when love meets luxury. Think Sex and the City vibes but with an existential twist! Here’s everything you need to know about the love triangle of the summer!

All About The Plot

While any plot with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal would be an immediate “yes” to most, when you look at the written plot and not just the visual, it’s clear that this isn’t your ordinary rom com. At the center of the story is Lucy, played by the ever-enigmatic Dakota Johnson — a Manhattan matchmaker who believes the perfect couple can be algorithmically engineered through income brackets, aesthetics, and ambition. Love, to Lucy, is more strategic and less about butterflies and more about bottom lines. But sometimes, even strategy gets thrown out the window when something unexpected gets thrown into the original path. Lucy’s world spins off-axis when she's caught between two men: Randy (Pedro Pascal), a suave, wealthy man who checks every material box, and John (Chris Evans), her emotionally chaotic ex-boyfriend who reappears just when she thought she’d “leveled up.” It’s not just a love triangle — it’s a full-blown identity crisis wrapped in designer heels!

What the NEWEST Trailer has revealed

In the most recent trailer, her past with John seems complicated. Seen stuck in traffic with both of them standing outside of their cars, Lucy says upset “I don’t want to fight about money with my boyfriend,” and John replies with “Do you want to know how hard it is to make you happy?” Indicating their friction in their past relationship. “I’m gonna die alone, or get a rich husband,” Are the famous last words Lucy says in the trailer before her and Randy meet at a glam wedding, the union of the newlyweds courtesy of her matchmaking.

While she met her potential new love in the trailer, she also bumped into her ex, who was working as a waiter at the same event. “You’re not gonna marry him, are you?” While Lucy’s feelings for Randy are strong, and he seems to woo her in every corner of a room they’re in, she’s also at a conflict with surfacing sparks from her past love as well. An engagement ring is even flashed at the end of the trailer, but from whom is the question.

Who is Directing the film:

It’s pretty clear that the film is reminiscent of the classic rom com eras many women and even men are used to. The vision for the film in 2025 stands out with a very nostalgic twist. So who’s responsible for this unique movie? It’s none other than Oscar- nominated director, Celine Song! She was recently featured in Time Magazine, and her inspiration for the film? Was based on her own job as a matchmaker years ago, just like Lucy.

Celine Song on set of Materialists (Gold Derby)

“All of the men would say ‘fit.’ What they meant was 20 BMI, just one level above underweight,” Song remembers. “The women wanted someone who was 6’ tall. My joke was, that person is going to be 5’7” by the time you’re 90. And what is the goal of marriage if not to grow old together? All these numbers have nothing to do with that.”

Song also took a different turn with this movie in focusing on the financial aspects. It’s clear that while their personalities are very different, John and Randy are also in different financial positions. John on the hustle and broke, and Randy living in an extravagant twelve million dollar per month apartment. He’s what people call… a “unicorn”. “In every aspect of our lives we talk about numbers. We talk about cars in this way, houses, jobs… I don’t think it’s really gone away,” Song also said per Time.

Fans of both Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal have been very excited for the upcoming release of this new rom com. And Dakota Johnson’s experience in all different genres of movies makes her the perfect lead, especially with someone as calculative as her character Lucy.

Materialists releases June 13th in theaters!
